Born in New Jersey, Sheryl Hibbs divided her time as a child on the east coast between Maine and Florida. She developed a special place in her heart for New England and continues to spend time in Maine. She also loves the rural areas of Tennessee where she currently lives with her husband.
At an early age Sheryl was encouraged by her second grade teacher to develop her artistic abilities. Beginning with pastel and watercolors, she quickly made the transition to oils and has been captivated by them ever since.
After graduating from Florida State University with a degree in Interior Design and a minor in Marketing she worked as an Interior Designer. At the same time she pursued art and became a founding member of a small art league. She continued her art education through mentoring and workshops of various styles and mediums.
When her children were school age Sheryl became a business owner. She employed her painting techniques to tromp l'oeil, murals, and faux finishing. Her clients also regularly requested commissioned oil paintings. After thirteen years she redirected her energies to focus more clearly on her career as a professional artist.
She became the owner of a gallery in Germantown, TN and for four years used the space as a studio and a gallery. While she enjoyed the business side, she found that she was not able to paint to the degree that she wanted. She closed the business to concentrate on painting.
Sheryl continues to work mainly in oils on canvas with an emphasis on abstract/expressionist paintings. Her design background is evident in her balance of color, values and pattern. She enjoys layering colors and making the artwork feel as though it has movement and form.
I have adapted a quote from Eric Lidell that says it all for me. "I believe that God made me for purpose…when I paint, I feel His pleasure."
